Accelerated Fellowship

From 1 January 2002 fellowship will be available through an "accelerated" scheme based on continuing professional development (CPD). The aims are to add value to the FCCA designation and to further underline ACCA's commitment to lifelong learning (i.e. the continuous maintenance and enhancement of professional skills and knowledge).
Central to the concept of linking fellowship to lifelong learning is an emphasis on members demonstrating that CPD has been undertaken. The new accelerated route involves:

compliance with existing CPD recommendations - a minimum of 35 hours' CPD per year, of which 21 hours must be structured CPD - for a period of three years following admission to membership
• the completion of a Professional Development Record.

The three years which lead to the award of accelerated fellowship need not run consecutively, nor do they have to be the three years immediately following admission to membership.
Meeting CPD requirements
The various study methods available to those members opting to advance to fellowship through the accelerated route include:

obtaining a further relevant qualification, such as an MBA study towards membership of another professional body, such as the Chartered Institute of Taxation course attendance, both online and classroom based
• a combination of the above.

In respect of accelerated fellowship, the CPD year can commence at any point in the calendar year. While members must show compliance with a minimum of 35 hours of CPD per year for each of the three years, the process is not cumulative; hours in excess of 35 cannot be carried over from one CPD year to the next. For example, an MBA that takes 12 months to complete counts as one of the three years' CPD study required to obtain accelerated fellowship, regardless of the number of hours' study undertaken during that year.
MBA programmes accredited by AMBA (www.mba.org.uk) and MBA programmes offered by providers accredited by EQUIS (www.efmd.be) and AASCB (www.aacsb.edu) count towards accelerated fellowship. In addition, MBAs offered by institutions listed on ACCA's exemption database are also acceptable. ACCA also maintains a list of acceptable professional bodies whose qualifications count towards accelerated fellowship (Appendix I). Where ACCA knows the exemptions available to members from the qualifications offered by the professional bodies listed, these are marked. In some cases, ACCA has negotiated special exemptions packages for ACCA members and these are also marked.
Learning outcomes
While undertaking CPD is central to linking fellowship with lifelong learning, the emphasis is firmly placed on learning outcomes rather than on the training option chosen. Training is expected to be relevant both to members' skills gaps and to the business needs of their employers. ACCA has produced a Professional Development Record for members to record their learning outcomes, and to demonstrate how the further study and training undertaken have been applied to their practical working environment.
Applying for accelerated fellowship
Only ACCA's Professional Development Record can be submitted when applying for accelerated fellowship. This Record forms part of ACCA's Professional Development Manual which is available on ACCA's website and in hard copy by contacting ACCA.
No other supporting evidence need be submitted, such as certificates of attendance at courses. However, ACCA reserves the right to seek verification from any course provider listed. The discovery of fraud will lead to the removal of the award and may lead to disciplinary action. Professional Development Records may be completed retrospectively, provided that the three years' CPD was undertaken following admission to membership.
Completed Professional Development Records should be submitted to Members' Affairs, ACCA, 64 Finnieston Square Glasgow G3 8DT, UK or by e-mail to fellowship@accaglobal.com. They can also be completed and submitted online via ACCA's e-business site.
Applications for accelerated fellowship are considered once a month, usually on the 15th of each month, upon which date fellowship is awarded if the application is successful. Upon receiving confirmation of fellowship status, a member is entitled to describe himself/herself as a "Fellow" and to use the designatory letters FCCA.
